So with everyone else I wanted to get playing with my new Toys that I picked up from the Gencon Orders and with that was the Alternative and Avatar versions of Sonnia Criid for my Guild Crew.
I wasn’t too sure on the Alternative Sonnia when I first had her arrive but as I’ve been playing with her I don’t see myself going back to using the original one.
Compared to the original I’ve decided that it was time to change up the colours for her and went for a black coat with purple trims which was to offset the red/orange of her eyes and the fireball that she is throwing.
Also keeping with the rest of my Guild I kept with the Blue pants and grey shirt.
Another thing I’ve gone back on a lot of my Guild and added was some static grass clumps so they don’t look as barren as they did before.
So after finishing up with Alt Sonnia I wanted to have the Avatar Sonnia finished for MOAB which I have mentioned before.
I have to admit she is one intimidating model to paint… I had never attempted to do any flames before but what can you do but try to do them!
Starting off I had her fully assembled before starting to paint. After numerous times trying to figure out how to have her connected to the flame dragon I finally found where she fits best and with that I didn’t end up Pinning her to it like I normally would. As she has multiple points of connection to the dragon I managed to get her feet, mouth and both arms to connect to it.
Now the first thing that I have to say if you want to paint up this model dry fit Sonnia and then paint her separately… The amount of fiddling I had to do to get the brush to paint her back black after I had finished the yellows, oranges and whites on the dragon was driving me crazy!
That being said she came out really well and I was glad to have her finished.
Anyway on with the photos!
Let me know in the comments what you think!
Both models turned out great. And honestly for someone that had never tried painting flames before you sure looked like you nailed it from where Im sitting.
As far as the painting Sonnia prior to attaching her to the flames I couldn’t agree more. Though I haven’t painted this particular model, I have painted several models in the past where I had to put thought into where parts were going to attach making painting behind them difficult. I have gotten used to putting thought into this during assembly from those past experiences. It used to drive me nuts trying to paint the chest of a space marine that is holding his bolter across it. LOL
Having put together Avatar Sonnia myself recently (and the several blog posts explaining my attempt) I raise my hat to your fantastic results. You seem to have had a lot fewer problems with it than myself and the final model looks awesome!
@cfallsgamer – I took about 10 hours just painting the flames and doing as fine lines as I could to make sure I didn’t mess it up. The white which was the final step was a gamble and I think it makes her pop a lot more.
@Malcontent – I’ve been reading your article on putting together aSonnia… To be honest getting her arms into position is a real pain in the ass as You need to have them pinned (well I did) and then while drying you have to get her in the correct position…
But the pain in building is worth it for the end result…
Nicely done sir
@docbungle Thanks!
When will we see you doing one?
Wow, what a magnificent piece! I am just getting into the game, and while I have painted a lot of figs, I am still very basic in my talent I think… so, I am loving all the pics and tips that you guys provide.
@Malcontent: Can you tell me where your blog is as well? I would love to see your work too, and read whatever you have to share about your work.
Thank you all for sharing, and I look forward to reading more of the site, and keeping up with all you do.
@NYColts18 Thanks for the comments. If you have any questions feel free to ask me here or via the Wyrd forum.
